YEAR 3 PORTFOLIO Development

YEAR 3 PROJECT

School for Performng Arts and a Concert Hall

As I wanted to bring Mancunian identity back to the area of Spinningfields I looked at what Mancunian identity was. I realised that music was a huge part of Mancunian identity. Manchester is widely known for its music scene. Many iconic bands, such as The Smiths, Joy Division and Oasis were formed in Manchester. Manchester has been a venue for music events that have had a huge influence on the world’s music scene such as a concert by The Sex Pistols in 1976 in the Lesser Free Trade Hall at the start of the Punk Rock movement.

Another social issue that came up from researching UK census was the lack of pre-occupation for teenagers. I wanted to create a programme that would provide occupation for young adolescents and at the same time bring music scene back to the area. That is how I came up with the idea to create a School of Performing Arts which would have a concert hall open to public.

In the process of creating the programme I learned to collect data from various sources, filtering and organising it in order to generate architectural solutions to social and urban problems. I also learned various techniques of diagramming, observing and representing data. Further, I gained an ability to conjoin, link the theoretical knowledge that came from the readings, data findings and site analysis into one integral peace of analysis which then helped to suggest a programme relatable to the site.
